The
Los Angeles Police Retirement Benefit and Insurance Association,
Inc. (RB&I) is a separate corporation providing
additional life insurance benefits for its members and their families.
Any
active member of the Los Angeles Police Department regularly appointed
and sworn in as provided by law to perform the duties of a regular
police officer of the City of Los Angeles, may become a member of
the Los Angeles Police Retirement Benefit and Insurance Association
Inc.
An
officer may file an application therefore at any time within one
(1) year after becoming a sworn member of the Los Angeles Police
Department. The Board of Directors of RB&I
may accept any completed application for membership or for reinstatement
or restoration to membership upon such terms and conditions as the
Board of RB&I determines. The effective date
of such membership may relate back to and include the date such
application was properly submitted to the Los Angeles Police Retirement
Benefit and Insurance Association, Inc.
RB&I
Active Members
Cost per pay period is $3.00.
RB&I
Retired Members
Cost per pay period is $6.00.
When
a member has been a member for 25 years, the membership is considered
paid in full and dues are no longer required.
Benefits
are as follows:
Death
Benefits Active Members:
Active
member for less than 4 years, designated beneficiary receives $15,000.00.
Active
member for 4 or more years, designated beneficiary receives $25,000.00.
Death Benefits Retired Members:
Retired
member with less than 4 years of membership, designated beneficiary
receives $15,000.00.
Retired member with 4 to 24 years, designated beneficiary receives
$25,000.00.
Retired member with 25 or more years of service prior to 7-1-05,
designated beneficiary receives $8,937.50.
Retired member with 25 or more years of service after 7-1-05, designated
beneficiary receives $10,000.00.
Cash
Benefit:
Any non-retired RB&I member who has resigned or who has been
removed as a member of the Los Angeles Police Department from his/her
position shall be entitled to a partial refund of dues paid in an
amount equal to one-third of the total amount paid after they have
been a member in good standing in RB&I for a period of three
years.
Cash
Surrender Benefit:
Cash surrender benefit in the amount of $4,000 is available to an
active participant who has been a member for 25 or more years.
Retired members are also eligible for the cash surrender benefit
in accordance with the following schedule:
