Long Term Disability (LTD) Insurance

For Active LAPRA Members Only

When we think of our most important assets, it's easy to forget that our income may be the one that needs protection most. That’s why the Los Angeles Police Relief Association (LAPRA) offers Long Term Disability (LTD) coverage, through UnitedHealthcare. LTD insurance provides income replacement if you experience a illness or injury. The coverage can help with everyday bills, such as the mortgage or rent, that continue even when you can’t work.

You are eligible to enroll if you are an active LAPRA member or enrolled to become an active LAPRA member. If you enroll on the date of your new recruit class, your coverage will become effective on that day.

If you do not enroll for LTD (which includes AD&D insurance) within 31 days of first being eligible, you will be required to complete an Evidence of Insurability form to enroll at a later date. Your coverage will not be effective unless approved, in writing, by UnitedHealthcare.

Definition of Disability

You are disabled when the insurance company determines that you are unable to perform the material and substantial duties of your regular occupation due to your illness or injury. After 12 months of benefit payments, you are considered to be disabled when the insurance carrier determines that, due to the same sickness or injury, you are unable to perform the duties of any gainful occupation for which you are reasonably fitted by education, training or experience.
